Renowned DJ crew, The Crimplenes, are coming on board with Orbital Radio for a monthly Saturday
time slot between 2 – 4pm. The ladies will be presenting a show called THE RHYTHM CELLAR
where they share their love of Soul, Garage, British Freakbeat, RnB, Mod Revival, Punk, Northern
Soul, Power Pop and K-Tel Classics; in short….encompassing all the sounds that make the mod
genre the bounty of great music it is (except perhaps for that last addition). As well known for their
antics behind the decks as much for the tunes they spin, this two-hour show promises to be action-
packed! Expect to hear tunes you know very well, tunes you have never heard before and tunes that
you thought you would rather forget but actually realise now sound so much better 20 or 30 years on.
The Crimplenes have a unique style of DJ’ing and we hope you get on board for the ride and enjoy the
music we want to share with you.
A bit of background on the girls:
SARA DJ
Like many DJ’s, a love of music bordering on obsession led Sara on a journey of discovery. Arriving
from the UK in 1981 as a 14yr old Mod, she soon discovered the nocturnal haunts of the underground
side of Sydney live music and clubbing. It was perfect for this style obsessed girl and led to her being
introduced to that most envied of beings; “THE DJ”.
Whilst her background is firmly entrenched in Soul, 60’s Garage, Blues, Jazz and RnB, she is the sort
of person who does not believe in being categorised as evidenced through her playlists and her
attitude to the dance-floor.
Starting off as a house DJ in the mid 80’s, Sara has played alongside many of today’s world-
renowned DJ’s. Moving to Canberra in the early 80’s, she still had the desire to be a DJ and so that is
what she did, beginning to host her own radio show on Canberra’s 2XX, which led to a warmup stint
at The Manhattan nightclub. She was hooked. The big smoke beckoned and so she packed her
record box and moved back in 1988.
Sydney brought gigs and shows on community radio stations 2SER, BondiFM and Radio DEX. Sara
was instrumental in helping break some of the BIG names of the then young dance scene that was
happening in Sydney due to connections with some of Sydney’s forerunners of dance promotion,
Funk Inc, Love, FlimFlam, Light and Vibes on A Summer’s Day to name a few. Her shows were
always extremely popular, informative and busy with international guests. Sara has held residencies
at many of Sydney’s top clubs where you can guarantee her sets always made the dance floor rock.
She has never forgotten that she came from the floor herself, which is why she adopted the mantra
Educate and entertain. “There is nothing better than creating a positive vibe in the room, looking out
over a happy dance floor and getting it back from the crowd….”
Deciding in 2007 to hang up her headphones on the main club circuit, Sara can now be found gracing
the decks and indulging her love of Rare Soul, 60’s Garage and RnB with The Crimplenes.
The peoples DJ, Sara is the real deal!
Bexy J
With no where near as accomplished a resume as Sara DJ, Bexy J started out as a serious collector
of vinyl from her mid-teens with a particular penchant for Australian ‘60s beat and British freakbeat.
By 19 she was editing internationally renowned garage punk ‘zine Born Loser featuring interviews,
record reviews and articles on 60s music from around the globe with the focus very much on the
garage and RnB side of things. A request from a friend to DJ their band’s gig led to her becoming
interested in doing more of the same. Becoming friends with Sara was a part of this formative
experience as she generously shared her knowledge about how all the parts work together. Twelve
years later and The Crimplenes are still going strong, playing myriad of events including being
regulars at club nights like Uptown Top Ranking, Reggae Got Soul, K-Tel Classics, Sydney Rock and
Roll Markets, All or Nothing, the annual Aussie SKA-BQs, Sydney Soul Weekenders, The Night Owl,
Mods Mayday and Ready, Steady Fro. The Crimps have also DJed at a bunch of gigs featuring the
likes of The Pretty Things, The OzSkas, Rhoda Dakar, The Fangin’ Felines, The Porkers and a whole
bunch more. Throw the 40ths, 50ths, weddings, corporate happenings and backyard parties into the
mix and that’s a lot of fun and a whole lot of laughs. These days, the record collection is looking much
more eclectic and I look forward to sharing new and old tunes alike with the listeners of Orbital.
